SOCO Summer Fun

June 21, 2024

It’s officially summer! If you’re like the gals on The Small Social team, your calendar is probably packed with exciting events and social activities with friends. But, if you’re looking for some inspiration to fill up your weekends with summer fun, we have a few ideas for you.

Vic

Movies in the Square

Grab your lawn chairs and blankets (and maybe some bug spray) to enjoy one of Vic’s favourite summer activities: Downtown Kingston’s Movies in the Square. Throughout the summer, the City of Kingston hosts a series of movies in Springer Market Square. This year’s lineup includes classics like 10 Things I Hate About You, Beetle Juice, and Freaky Friday, plus newer blockbusters like The Barbie Movie and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning. Movies in the Square begins on June 20th and runs weekly on Thursdays throughout the summer beginning at dusk. Want to upgrade your movie watching experience? Check out The Star Lounge for optimal seating, snacks and drinks.

Live Music at Spearhead Brewery

If you’re like Vic, you love a good drink with friends. Add in some entertainment and it’s a formula for a pretty good evening. This summer, she’ll be frequenting Spearhead Brewery for some craft cider and live performances from local artists. Do you have a talent you’d like to share? Spearhead even has open mic nights for aspiring artists to show off their skills. Vic will not be participating, but she’s happy to go out and show the local community her support.

Wedding Reception Planning

Are you in the thick of wedding planning? You’re not alone. Wedding bells have been ringing for the last 3 summers at The Small Social, and this year is no exception. Vic is the newest bride on our team. She recently got married in a small, intimate wedding in Prince Edward County. She and her new husband will be spending the rest of the summer planning a big reception to celebrate the occasion with friends and family. We love a good wedding and are so happy for Vic!

Ashley

Empire Rockfest: The Beaches + Dizzy + Luscious

If there’s one thing Ashley loves in the summer, it’s a music festival. This year, she can’t wait for Empire Rockfest: The Beaches + Dizzy + Luscious. The event, featuring three incredible Canadian artists, will be held on July 19th at the Empire Theatre in Belleville. Grab a few friends, book a table at a local restaurant before the show, and make a night of it.

Annual Canada Day Party

It’s an annual tradition of good drinks, good food, and amazing company at Ashley’s Canada Day Party. Is there a better way to spend the holiday than at the cottage, taking in the summer sun on the dock or hanging out in the lake with friends? It’s hard to beat.

Cat

Blue Jays Game

Spending some time in Toronto this summer? A Blue Jays game is almost a must-attend event. Cat loves to head into the city to catch a game with her family and friends. With plenty of home games lined up for the season and fun themed events taking place, a Blue Jays game is a great activity for a big group of friends or an outing with the family. And, in the heart of the city with countless restaurants and attractions around, you can enjoy a day of fun with something fun for everyone.

Taylor Swift Concert

While it’s not technically happening during the summer, the Taylor Swift concert this November will be the highlight of Cat’s year… quite possibly her life.

Brooklyn

Glowball Golf Tournament

Brooklyn has a pretty packed summer planned, but one of her favourite activities with her mom and sister is a round of golf at a local club. She and her group are looking forward to the Glowball Golf Tournament at Briar Fox this August. This fun nighttime round of golf is a popular event at Briar Fox Golf Club. Registration includes your round, cart rental, dinner, and a unique glow in the dark experience on their beautiful, professional course. Registration opens in July. Keep your eyes on their social media channels and website to reserve your spot.

Nicole

The Toronto Zoo

For a day out with the little ones, Nicole will be spending more than one afternoon at the Toronto Zoo this summer. Between her and her group of friends, there are 14 kids to keep occupied and entertained. With a special kids zoo, 6 different zones to explore, multiple attractions, restaurants, ice cream stands, and a splash pad to cool off at the end of the day, the Toronto Zoo is a great place where the whole crew can enjoy the day.

Kingston Buskers Rendezvous

If you love spectacle and entertainment, you should check out the Kingston Buskers Rendezvous from July 4th-7th. This festival of street performers in Kingston’s Downtown features dancing, sword juggling, fire throwing, music, and much more. There will be workshops and interactive experiences for the kids, including a mini-plane ride event with the Royal Canadian Air Force. And if you’re looking for some evening entertainment, the festival has introduced a new Buskers After Dark highlighting street art, musical entertainment, and a circus-like atmosphere to celebrate the essence of Busking.

Jules

Lake House Canandaigua

Jules loves spending her summer at the cottage hanging out with friends. But this year, she’s bringing that vibe with her south of the border for a long weekend at Lake House Canandaigua. This beautiful resort in the Finger Lakes Region of New York is a perfect place to get away, unwind, and enjoy a combination of luxury living and an escape to nature. With a full service spa and waterfront access, Jules is looking forward to a fully relaxing experience.

Kidz Bop Concert

On the other end of the spectrum, Jules will be spending a lot of the summer taking her kids on excursions and looking for family-friendly activities. Both the kids are obsessed with Kidz Bop and they can’t wait to attend the Kidz Bop Concert in Toronto later this summer. They’ll be rocking out all night to popular songs covered by the kids music group.

Lara

Bite Beauty Lip Lab

As part of a bachelorette party for her sister this summer, Lara is going to the Bite Beauty Lip Lab in Toronto. This hands-on experience gives guests the opportunity to create their own signature lipstick, gloss or balm, completely from scratch. It’s a guided class with Bite Beauty professionals helping you every step of the way. Check it out for a fun afternoon with the lipstick enthusiasts in your group, then head out for a drink with friends on one of Toronto’s many patios.

All The Farmer's Markets

Lara loves a Farmer’s Market and lucky for her, there are many to choose from in her area. Some of her favourite items include local produce like strawberries and peaches, fresh baked goods, and all-natural, locally made skincare products.

Madi

Steve Earle: Alone Again Tour 2024

Madi has a very musical summer lined up, starting with the Steve Earle: Alone Again Tour. This sold out show with Jerry Leger as support act, highlights some of the best of country. Steve Earle is a master storyteller, with his songs being recorded by artists including Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, The Pretenders before releasing his own record in the mid 1980s.

As a country girl through and through, Madi can’t wait for this concert!

Sean Paul: Greatest Tour 2024

She may be country, but Madi has a diverse taste in music. She’s wrapping up the summer in Toronto with the Sean Paul: Greatest Tour 2024. If Sean Paul has ever been part of the soundtrack of your summer - like most of us millennials - there’s still time to get your tickets and attend this end-of-summer concert.

Erin

Fergus Highland Games

Are you looking for a summer event that combines storytelling and lore with music, pop culture, and sporting competitions? You should check out the Fergus Highland Games with Erin in August. The Festival, which is held near Guelph every summer, has been around since 1946, but quickly gained momentum over the last 10 years, thanks in large part to the popularity of the show Outlander. There will be Celtic music, crafts and events for children, music, beer tents, whisky tastings, and much more.

Westporch Festival

Less than an hour north of Kingston, is the town of Westport. And each September, they host the Westporch Festival. This unique event features fun, food, and fabulous entertainment, all from the front porches of the town’s residents. This one-day event is packed with entertainment - the 2023 festival showcased 18 different artists in one day. Erin can’t wait to enjoy the food, art, and celebration of all things local in Westport. Information hasn’t been released for 2024 yet, but you can see a recap of last year and get an idea of what to expect on the Westporch Festival website

Other Summer Events

Most of our team is located in the Kingston area, which means there are a couple of events that at least a few of us will be attending.

Mackinnon Brother’s Back to the Farm

If you’re in the Kingston area, you’re probably familiar with Back to the Farm at Mackinnon Brothers. It’s a summer staple event for The Small Social team, where we enjoy great food, incredible local brews, and a full day of music and entertainment. The festival takes place rain or shine, so if you’re heading out on August 18th, be sure to check the weather and dress accordingly.

Big Ticket, Small Town - Glorious Sons

In case you didn’t know, Kingston has a major music scene, and The Glorious Sons are a local staple. We have a few Glorious Sons fans on the team, and they couldn’t be more excited to be attending Big Ticket, Small Town this July in nearby Tweed. The event is all about bringing big music to small towns that don’t normally get that kind of exposure, with The Glorious Sons headlining for the first time since 2018. You have the option to attend a solo show on July 13th, or purchase a package for the whole weekend. There are also accommodations available, so you can relax and enjoy without worrying about transportation.

Will you be attending any of these events or checking out our summer destinations? Tag us in your stories on social media! We love to see what you’re getting up to this season.
